After spending a month with the new urban Decay naked Wild West palette, I’m delighted to say that I can absolutely recommend it. I take pleasure in its mix of functional neutrals (a mélange of matte brown, beige, taupe and gray) with colorful teals, bronzes and golds, and if you’re like me and love a wearable, easy eye look, you can get that look quite easily.

Here’s what you do: 1) mix one or two of your favorite mattes with a blending brush, and sweep that onto your lids. Then, 2) wet an angled eye brush, load it up with any of the shades from the palette, and use it to line your upper lash line.

I like to think of this palette as a neutral matte palette with a bunch of fun liner shades. ? and when you use naked Wild West in this way, you’ll have an limitless (and easy) variety of wearable combinations to choose from!

One item of note for my ladies with hooded lids — Laredo, the matte gray taupe, is absolutely key! considering that a lot of of the naked Wild West mattes are warm-toned browns, I like to mix in the cooler-toned Laredo to create the illusion of a deeper crease.

Jane Iredale clearly Pink is a powdered pinky beige blush that leans slightly cool, and it absolutely looks like something Chanel would do! I love how it looks like a matte pink when you sweep it on your cheeks, but you can see the tiniest little flecks of silvery glitter peek when you look closely. It’s sophisticated, and a little goes a long way.

If you like Chanel Pink explosion or Clinique Cupid, you’ll probably be into clearly pink.

As for Origins Dusky rose Lipstick, like the blush, it packs a pigmented wallop. It’s a brownish rose with a cream finish… have you ever worn MAC Cosmo Lipstick? because if you have and you liked it, I’m betting Dusky rose will work for you!

L’Occitane Shea Butter gentle Toner

L’Occitance is a brand that I don’t tend to turn to for facial skincare – their biggest draw for me is their Shea Butter Hand Cream. I decided to give their Shea Butter gentle Toner ($25 for 200ml) a try since it’s meant to be both gentle and moisturizing, plus it’s alcohol free. I got this for “free” last year when I redeemed my optimum points at shoppers drug Mart.

It comes in a substantial plastic bottle with a spray pump which is a nice addition for a toner – I tried spraying directly onto my face but it is NOT a fine mist (like taking a hose to the face!), so I just spray onto a cotton pad. I do like having a spray nozzle, as it is more controlled to use compared to a pour bottle – 5 sprays is enough to soak a cotton pad.

The toner has a faint shea scent which isn’t overwhelming and a smell that I do enjoy, but it may not be to everyone’s preference. It removes any remaining residue after my 2 step cleansing (oil cleansing, then micellar water) and it provides a hydrated skin surface to receive serums and moisturizers.

The second ingredient after water is cornflower water, which is purported to be soothing and a decongestant. I was worried about the inclusion of bitter orange extract as sometimes orange extracts irritate my skin but I’ve not reacted to this.

The only nit-picky thing I would say is that the spray tube doesn’t reach ALL the way down to the bottom of the bottle, so when I’m down to the last cm at the bottom, I won’t be able to get all the product out. (Aside, Greenworks household cleaners have already solved this problem! They created a “Smart Tube Technology” where the spray tube is moulded into the bottle and runs the whole length of the bottle so you can get every last drop – ingenious!)

Pros:
• spray nozzle for easy dispensing
• gentle and soothing formula
• hydrating ingredients including glycerin, shea butter extract
• alcohol free
• made in France

Cons:
• fragranced
• short spray tube
• bitter orange extract may be irritating for some skin
• more expensive than other comparable products

Stash worthiness: 7/10

Interesting to note: the label on the front has raised bumps for braille.

Overall, I like this toner and would consider purchasing it. In fact, I’m curious to try other L’Occitane skincare, starting with the Shea Cleansing Oil. Has anyone else used L’Occitane facial skincare?

Oh, and delighted national Lash Day too! Yes, we’re celebrating eyelashes now. My lashes are currently on the hunt for a new mascara, by the way. If you’re delighted with yours, please share because Laura Mercier Caviar just isn’t doing it for me anymore (the curl hold isn’t the same for whatever reason).

Lately, I’ve been wearing a layer of Ilia Fullest Volumizing Mascara with a waterproof mascara on top, and while it does the job just fine, I’d like to have a one-and-done solution, so let me know if you’ve found anything life changing!

Speaking of lashes, Connor had a mini-meltdown over her eyelashes recently. Hers are long and curly like El Hub’s, and they often get caught in her eyes, which is very uneasy for her. When it happens, I either help her use a washcloth or rinse out her eyes with water to get the stuck lashes out.

Anywho, it happened again the other day, and she started talking about cutting her lashes off because they were so bothersome… I shut that down real quick. I think between the “absolutely not” and “you’re gonna poke your eye out,” something may have gotten lost in translation because she just started bawling. I held her in my arms and assured her that it wasn’t always going to be a problem, and that one day she’d be grateful for such charming lashes. then we rinsed out her eyes and went about service as usual.

Beauty Products: What things Do You get the Most?

1. Black hair ties

I am permanently getting new packs of black hair ties to replace the ones that vanish into the black hole of appeal products. When I try truly difficult not to lose them, I may go five, perhaps six months, without getting a new pack.

Typically, though, I’m grabbing a fresh one every three or four months. I’ve provided in to the truth of not being able to keep them. In the words of the Mandolorian, “This is the way.”

2. Hair Conditioner

OMG, so much conditioner! keep in mind exactly how in the ’80s as well as ’90s exactly how the directions on conditioner bottles would state something along the lines of working a quarter-size blob into your hair?
